Well I decided to crochet a scarf this time and after visiting an independant yarn shop in Cardiff bought a few skeins of chunky yarn in a mid red colour. Sadly this store is no longer there as it was killed off by the high rent and business rates being charged.
I decided to do a very simple stitch for the scarf and due to this and the fact it is chunky yarn it worked up quickly. I have used the US terms for the stitches as I learnt to crochet from online videos which were mainly ftom US makers so I am more used to them.
The pattern was a 2 row repeat
After the starting chain and the set up row of single crochet in every stitch
Row 1: double crochet all, chain 1 and turn
Row 2: single crochet all, chain 3 and turn
Just repeat yhese until you get to the length you want.
After the scarf reached the length I wanted I fastened off in the usual way and then added the fringe/tassels.
The result is a fairly dence fabric which will certainly keep the cold out. It is a little wide which I noticed after the first few rows but I wasn't going to undo it to start again.
The yarn I used was stylecraft Bellissima chunky in the colour Rio red. This is a 100% acrylic yarn. I used a 7mm hook which is 1mm bigger than the recommended size on the yarn label. I do this as I twnd to have a tight tension and a large hook compensates for this.
The yarn was soft and nice to work with without that plastic feeling acrylic yarns can have. I would use this yarn again perhaps make on slightly narrower.
