Knitting Basic rib stich scarf

So this was my first knitting project it was a basic two row repeat scarf.

For this I used ‘caron simply soft’ yarn in purple (shade code 9781). This is a medium weight (Aron weight) yarn which is 100% acrylic. For this 5mm needles are recommended. As this was a scarf the gauge was not massively important but my tension did change slightly after the first few rows but then became more even.

The yarn was nice to knit with and moved smoothly and did not irritate my fingers as I was working with it. I used aluminium needles for this as they were the ones my gran always used. I think the material your needles are made from is personal choice. I prefer metal needles but I have done a few scarves on plastic ones which I do not like as much as I find they grip the yarn too much. I am yet to try wooden and bamboo ones.

The pattern is a two row repeat the pattern is available for free on the love craft website. (Men's Basic hat and scarf set). It is a simple patten with involves just the knit and purl stitches. The only real place to go wrong is forgetting to move the yarn to the front or back of your work when switching stitches.

Cast on: This needs to be an even number of stitches I cast on 42 stitches using the long tail cast on. I must have made a small error early on in my knitting as I ended up with 43 stitches. This was probably due to an accidental yarn over. After noticing this I switched to starting odd rows with knit 3 (instead of knit 2) and end the even rows with purl 3 (rather than purl 2). To make sure I kept track I tied a bit of waste yarn to the stub end of one of my needles.

I knitted this until it was about 62” long and used one ball of the yarn. If you make it wider or longer you may need more than this one ball.

The result is a fairly closed rib stich but it is quite strethy across the width of the item
If you are going to knit this I would advise the use of life lines every few inches. I use a much finer yarn and using a embodery needle put it through the stitches on the needle before I knit the next row. So if you have to pull back you only need to pull back to the most recent lifeline then remount the stitches.

I bought both the yarn and my needles from Love Crafts
