Knitting simple garter stich scarf

After my brother found out I was learning to knit he commented 'so I'll be getting a scarf for Christmas then?' probably as a joke but I agreed to it. I first decided to make ones for my nephews as with them being 5 years old I could get these done fairly quickly.

So for my nephews I went for the simplest stitch which is garter stitch. Here you simply knit every row so there is nothing complex about it. To add a slight patterning I did a slip stitch purl wise at the start of every row. This produces a chain along the edge so looks better (to me) than the bumps garter stitch usually produces.

Now my nephews like quite bright colours, one more than the other so one was done in quite a bright orange the other in emerald green.

For these I used cygnet chunky yarn which is 100% acrylic and as it was for young children - machine washable. I also used 6 mm plastic knitting needles.

The yarn was nice to work with and flowed easily through my fingers and was not rough on them the colour was even throughout the ball. The yarn also did not split which is always a good sign. The needles I was not too keen on as they gripped the yarn a bit too much for my liking but they were all I could get hold of in that size as I did not want to pay the cost of wooden needles.

I cast on 20 stitches and knitted these to 40" which took less than one ball of the yarn.

I bought the needles from love crafts and the yarn from the knitting network.
