I have tried knitting these a couple of ways.
Firstly cast on 3 stitches and then mainly knit all but with a kfb increase on each row on the last stitch before the middle.
The second method was to cast on 40 stitches and also knit almost all stitches but using left leaning and right leaning decreaces on each alternate rows.
I found the first one easier to knit as the kfb (knit front and back) stitch I am now quite used to. The second had my current knitting nemisis the ssk (slip slip knit) stitch. This I found difficult to do and almost flung my knitting off my needles more than once.
However, the first method produced a diagonal channel that I did not like the look of. I think if I made number of them then stitched them together to form a cross like patten it would look better but never mind. The second method gave no channel but did give a distinctive 'right side' and 'wrong side' appearance, which I don't mind too much
I used caron simply soft yarn to make these and 5mm needles from my interchangeable set with the shortest chord I had available. The yarn is 100% acrylic and was nice to work with. It didn't split on me but the green yarn did, at times, become quite a bit thicker in places then go back to normal. This did not really effect the look of the finished square but was a bit odd to work with.
I personally prefer the charcoal colour to the green and I think the larger one with both colours was a mistake as I don't think the two colours go all that well together. As my dad used to say 'it looked better in my mind'. I think red and black may have been better.
