Knitted Baby Blanket

Knitting a Feather and Fan scarf

My latest knitting project I went back to a scarf.

Here I have used the pattern which was on the inside if the yarn band which is known as 'feather and fan'. It is a nice pattern and I can see it being adapted to make a blanket using the same patten by casting on more stitches and repeating the patten more times.

The paten is a 4 row repeat and it does involves a stitch which was new to me but is easy to work. This is the 'knit with yarn in front' stitch. This adds a yarn over as well as the knit stitch in one movement.

For the scarf I cast on the 42 stitches as instructed and the first and last 3 stitches of each row are always knitted which makes a boarder around the paten which is nice to see. However, if I were to do this again I may add another two stitches to make it 4 stitches on each side for a slightly larger boarder but that is just me.

For knitting it I used Sidar colourwheel dazzle yarn which was is a dk weight yarn and 4mm needles. I started with my bamboo needles but I found these had a bit too much grip on the yarn for me and the sharp tips split the yarn slightly especially where the strand of shimmer is added. I switched to my aluminium ones which reduced the splitting but were a little too slippy. I will, perhaps invest in some wooden needles if I were to knit this again.

The yarn is 78% acrylic, 19% wool, 3% polyester. I found it easy to work with and it is not rough on my fingers. I did, however, find it a little splitty especially with the strand of shimmer. However, it has knitted up well and it looks good as the item I am making. This is a cake yarn and in the 150g you get about 520 m or 568 yds which is not bad for the price. It is available in 3 shades. The one I have used is called 'paradise Island'. The colour transitions are reasonable well blended and not a sudden change. The yarn can be machine washed on the wool cycle but I don't tend to wash scarves all that often.

The pattern is easy to follow and it can be done in front of the TV as there is only one row you need to watch a bit more.

Pattern:

This is a 4 row repeat

Row 1: Knit all

Row 2: Purl all

Row 3: *kint 2 together 3 times, knit with yarn infront 6 times, Knit 2 together 3 times*

Row 4: knit all

I will use this pattern again but perhaps for larger items such as a blanket or a chair back.

Whilst the colour is not really me, I can gift the scarf or even sell it.
